Modernising Public Health - Public Health Champions

back to programmes

The programme delivers the modernising public health requirements as set out in the Public Health White Paper ‘Saving Lives’ by equipping community nurse participants with the appropriate knowledge and skill competencies. The programme runs over a six-month period offering:

  • Three x 2-day training modules
  • Three x 4 personal mentoring sessions
  • One x organisational raid
  • Six x action learning sets
  • A structured support pack of materials, audits and personal development instruments.
  • The formal content of the programme takes into account the:
  • The individual professional development needs of participants
  • Management skill development and explores the development of effective professional actions designed to enhance the performance of the public health nurse
  • Organisational development issues including the development of skills in organisational analysis and acquiring specific public health knowledge

In addition, all trainees:

  • are assigned a personal mentor
  • attend an organisational raid, which enables individuals within a particular set of organisational assumptions to access insights into organisational practice derived from entirely different organisational environments
  • takes part in an action learning set.  This is a powerful instrument or organisational change which, whilst initially based within the NHS, gained widespread coverage throughout both the public and private sectors.  This approach is appropriate for use in the modernising public health programme, which emphasises team learning and peer development.

The Public Health Champion course is accredited by the University of Teesside.

A typical course programme is available.
